Connect the ideas
Key relationships and graph reading
- Velocity–time best-fit gradient estimates acceleration
- A residual is measured value minus model value
- Agreement should be judged against uncertainty and scatter
Check your method
Three common mistakes
- Using one noisy interval as the entire trend.
- Reporting more precision than the measurements support.
- Claiming exact agreement from approximate data.
Original micro-example
Try the idea in miniature
A sensor records 0.5, 1.5 and 2.6 m s⁻¹ at 0.0, 0.5 and 1.0 s.
Show the short answer
An endpoint estimate gives a ≈ (2.6 − 0.5)/1.0 = 2.1 m s⁻². The middle point and measurement uncertainty should be checked before calling the acceleration constant.
