Connect the ideas
Key relationships and graph reading
- Horizontal: x = uₓt when resistance is negligible
- Vertical: y = uᵧt + ½at² with uᵧ = 0 for a horizontal launch
- Impact speed: v = √(vₓ² + vᵧ²)
Check your method
Three common mistakes
- Adding gravitational acceleration to the horizontal component.
- Using the horizontal speed in the vertical equation.
- Finding an impact component but not recombining the vector when asked for speed.
Original micro-example
Try the idea in miniature
A parcel leaves a conveyor horizontally at 4.0 m s⁻¹ from 1.8 m above the floor. Estimate its flight time and horizontal distance using g = 9.8 m s⁻².
Show the short answer
t = √(2 × 1.8 / 9.8) ≈ 0.61 s, so x = 4.0 × 0.61 ≈ 2.4 m.
